Pinkerton Tunnel - Updates & Progress Archive

CSX Transportation is soliciting bids for assistance in open cutting three (3) tunnels (Benford, Shoo Fly and Pinkerton) near Somerset, PA.  Work to be contracted includes: excavation, proper disposal of excess material, removal of existing tunnels, construction of the rack roadbed where indicated, and installation of temporary and permanent erosion controls, storm water management and drainage. To bid this work contractors must be on the established CSX Open Cut Contractor list.

All those who attend the Pre-Bid meeting must be properly attired with all necessary protective equipment including hard hat, safety glasses with side shields, highly reflect safety vests, laced work boots at least 6” high with a safety toe, and hearing protection.  No loose jewelry is to be worn including rings may be worn while on Railroad property.  No exceptions to these requirements will be allowed.

The Pre-Bid Meeting will be held Thursday, May 19th at 8:30 AM in at Somerset Fire Hall located at 340 West Union Street Somerset, PA 15501. CSX Transportation (CSXT) will host two public open houses to discuss the National Gateway rail infrastructure enhancements.

The initiative involves bridge replacements, tunnel work, and track lowerings along CSXT’s railroad between Coraopolis and Hyndman, Pennsylvania to obtain necessary vertical clearance required to allow more efficient and environmentally beneficial double-stack trains to pass.

Due to the snow emergency, the public meetings scheduled for National Gateway projects in Allegheny, Bedford and Somerset Counties have been cancelled. The meetings were to be held Tuesday, February 9 at the Quality Inn Conference Center in Somerset, Pennsylvania and Wednesday, February 10 at the University Club at Pitt in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These meetings will be rescheduled and announced shortly.
